Progreso, Yucatan

By highway 261, Progreso is located 40 km north of the capital city of the state of Yucatan, Merida. Progreso is in the northern point facing the Gulf of Mexico and represents the most important shipping port of the Yucatan Peninsula, featuring a 6 km long pier. This fishing and tourist destination offers beautiful beaches with crystalline waters and tranquil waves, and other attractions like boat races and sailing.

Considered by many Americans and Canadians a winter paradise, Progreso began to wake up from being a sleepy fishing village to an important port town in the sixties offering the possibility to spend relaxing days. Nowadays, it has become a gateway for cruise ships visitors too.

The Malecon or seaside promenade which is about 16 block long offers splendid views of the sea as well as the refreshing breeze in those warm days. >The beautiful port is excellent for swimming, boat races, fishing, and sailing, which count among the favorite activities.

Progreso offers grocery stores, good restaurants, typical market, hotels, handicraft stores, and the traditional services of a small vacation destination.

Additionally, nearby Progreso is Alacranes reef, which is an incredible spot for snorkeling. Besides, Perez Island, features two beautiful beaches, Chelem and Yucaltepen. These two beaches are highly recommended to visit due to their white sand, tranquil waves, and emerald green waters.

Overall, Progreso is well known for its fishing activity whose product is exported to Europe, the United Sates, and Japan. However, visitors can enjoy excellent sea food right on the Malecon or on the beach, along with great weather and friendly atmosphere.
