The city of Mayapan is linked to the late Post Classic period. Mayapan started its ruling period after Chichen Itza decay around the 1200´s. According to studies the League of Mayapan involved the seizure of Uxmal and Chichen Itza. The surface covered by Mayapan is about 4 square km. and the site is surrounded by a wall, which is unusual for Mayan cities. Among the group of buildings, the round temple, with a resemblance of Chichen Itza´s Castle, is the most prominent and it is thought to be used to worship Ehecatl, the god of wind. Mayapan was used as a base to rule northern Yucatan. The ruling period extended until the mid XV century when a rebellion started in Uxmal defeated the ruling family. In Mayapan a main square was bordered by government, and religious buildings. It is believed that dwellings of the ruling class were located here too. The constructions included temples and oratories. Other round buildings that can be appreciated are known as observatories. It has been established an influence of those cultures in the high plains of Mexico on the Mayan communities in the Yucatan Peninsula. Evidence of this can be traced in the murals that depict war scenes and death cult related issues. The Mayapan archaeological site is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. Sunday the entrance is free. | |
