Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz

Known as the key to the southeast and located in the southeast part of the state of Veracruz, the municipality of Coatzacoalcos is on the left bank of the river of the same name. South of Coatzacoalcos is the Istmo of Tehuantepec. East of Coatzacoalcos is the region known as "Los Tuxtlas": Santiago Tuxtla, Catemaco, and San Andres Tuxtla. West of the city is Villahermosa, whereas north is the Gulf of Mexico. Surrounding towns are Chinameca, Moloacan, Oteapan, Minatitlan, Las Choapas, Agua Dulce, Nanchital, and Ixhuatlan del Sureste. The industrial and economic base of Coatzacoalcos are the oil and the chemistry.

Coatzacolacos proudly welcomes tourists to its beautiful beaches and unrivalled sunsets. Many restaurants offer international and regional cuisine and the port features good infrastructure that includes hotels, discos, and bars.

To combine sun and beach is a good choice in Coatzacoalcos. The point where the Coatzacoalcos River meets the ocean is known as "Las Barrillas" and it is an excellent spot for swimming.

An outstanding tour can be taken along the river to admire the modern bridges Coatzacoalcos I and II.

Along the sea wall promenade, the view of the ocean together with the San Martin Hill and the sunset is simply amazing.

During the Holy Week in March or April, Coatzacoalcos receives thousand of visitors who enjoy the "Expoferia". An event that gathers expositions regarding industry, commerce, agriculture, cattle, and handicrafts; and there are as well many cultural activities.

The Carnival includes dances, parades, concerts, and parties. It takes place in February.

On March 19th, the festivities of San Joseph are held and the Zapoteca colony organizes a procession, masses, and chants while offering fruits to the participants.

Coatzacoalcos features an interesting museum located on the highest point of the Allende Congregation. In this museum the Olmecas Hall is worth the visit. Several traditional clothing, old pictures, and a great view of the Port of Coatzacoalcos can be enjoyed here.

Since 40 years ago, in August, a Shad fishing tournament takes place in Coatzacoalcos and more than 100 fishermen arrive to obtain this difficult catching species.
