Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas

Located in the central section of the state of Tamaulipas, 700 km or 434 miles northeast of Mexico city, the modern capital Ciudad Victoria features interesting sites for its visitors. Victoria is north of Ciudad Mante and south of Santander Jimenez and San Fernando. To the east is the Gulf of Mexico and to the west is the state of Nuevo Leon.

Ciudad Victoria was founded in 1750 as Villa de Santa Maria de Aguayo and it acquired its current name after the first president of Mexico, Guadalupe Victoria, an Independence hero, in 1825.

Ciudad Victoria is surrounded by natural attractions that allow different tourist and ecologic activities, including birdwatching, to the extent that it is called the Capital of Birds. In addition, the city features excellent hunting options that have contributed to its fame in this regard.

Among the interesting sites that can be visited in Ciudad Victoria are its Cathedral, the XIX century Municipality Palace, and the Anthropology and History Museum of the public university, which displays interesting samples of the Huasteca culture that flourished in this region.

Other interesting places that Ciudad Victoria offers are the Tamatan Recreational Center which features a nice zoo and sports facilities; the Adolfo Ruiz Cortines Sport Center, and The Estefania Castañeda Infantile Park, considered one of the best in the country and the first "Kindergarten" in Latin America.

Visitors to the markets of Ciudad Victoria will find an incredible wide and beautiful selection of clothing and handicrafts made of palm, henequen, and reed.

In Ciudad Victoria, different types of tourism can be undertaken. Alternative tourism include activities that warranty full contact with nature like rappel, climbing, camping, trekking, and kayaking, among others.

But Ciudad Victoria offers cynegetic tourism too, as many ranches offer the opportunity to hunt different animal species. In addition, ecologic tourism and extreme sports are other options for visitors to this wonderful destination.
