San Luis Potosi City, San Luis Potosi

Located in the southwest part of the state of the same name, the capital city San Luis Potosi is north of Queretaro and Tamasopo, south of Real de Catorce and Matehuala, west of Aguascalientes and Zacatecas, an east of Tampico, Madero, and Poza Rica. Embedded in the high desert amid the mountains known as "la Huasteca", this beautiful, colonial city was inhabited prior to the arrival of the Spanish conquerors by the people known as the Guachichile.

San Luis Potosi is a modern city that still keeps its colonial and ancient characteristics. Founded in 1592, the city became famous due to the richness of its mines that were the basis of its economy. With different architectural styles, the Historic Center is full of landmarks, parks, squares, gardens, monuments, and buildings. The city has many museums and offers its visitors excellent cuisine and lots of fun possibilities amid modern urban centers with all kind of services.

The architecture of the city of San Luis Potosi is impressive. Example of that is the beautiful cathedral next to the Arms square. At the same time, the Founders Square as well as the Spain Square, are two public spaces that locals and visitors enjoy alike.

Other example of this gorgeous architecture are the Ipina Building with neoclassical style, the Loreto Chapel, The Temple of the Company, the Temple of San Juan de Dios, and the Temple of San Miguelito, among many others.

When visiting the baroque style Real Caja, visitors will be able to appreciate its nice gate and its traditional balconies, featuring the famous "Potosino" style. From this building it is possible to admire the Arms Square, the Cathedral, and the dome of El Carmen.

San Luis Potosi has a strong cultural interest which is reflected in the beautiful theater buildings in the city. The Alarcon Theater and the Theater of Peace are good samples to this. In addition, several museums can be visited in San Luis Potosi, among which stand out The Museum of the Masks, featuring also paintings of Italian artists Molina and Campeani; the Popular Art Museum located in the San Francisco Square, the Manuel Othon Museum, and the Regional Museum, which exhibits excellent handicrafts produced by artisans of this state.

The national Potosino Fair, held in August, gathers many people interested in commercial, industrial, and cattle exhibitions.

Trips within the state of San Luis Potosi should include visits to Lourdes Springs, with thermal waters, hotel, restaurant, and other amenities; the Gogorron vacation center which offers a great spa; the Cathedral Cave where astonishing stalactites and stalagmites have formed; the "Media Luna" or Half Moon Lagoon that is ideal to practice water sports, featuring also an archaeological zone and camping facilities.

Other interesting cities in the state of San Luis Potosi include Valles, Tamasopo, and the famous Real de Catorce, that has been chosen recently by American producers as a great town for film making.
