Tulum, Rivera Maya

Tulum (Maya word for "Walled") is located south of Cancun and is a small Caribbean beach destination featuring a unique archaeological site. It is located about 131 km or 81 miles south of Cancun and its international airport. Regarding the ruin city, it is the only visitable archaeological zone next to the beach. Therefore, you should not miss this location.

 - CR -

Tulum means wall in Maya language and this name is due to the walls that surround the old city in three of its sides. On the fourth side, Tulum faces the incredible blue Caribbean Sea.

It can be reached by bus from any point along the Cancun and Riviera Maya. Buses with services to Tulum are also available from the International Airport Cancun. If you are driving by your own with a rented car just take the main highway Cancun - Chetumal and drive South (about 1.5 hours).

The location of Tulum at the southern point of Riviera Maya makes it a convenient place to stay if you would like to visit the nearby ecological parks of Xel-Ha (in the North) or Sian KaŽan (in the South).

Tulum can be divided in three different areas: Tulum hotel zone, downtown, and the archaeological site.

The hotel zone covers a stretch of about 6 km of white sandy beach facing the Caribbean Sea. It features a long list of cozy, small, and economical hotels. Some hotels offer you traditional Maya baths and spa treatments in harmonically embedded facilities, built under palm trees and with view to the sea. Tulum hotel zone is a perfect spot to relax between the beach, jungle and the Caribbean Sea.

Tulum downtown is a small hotel located land inwards along the highway Cancun - Chetumal. The village offers you banks with ATM machines, money exchange, grocery stores, pharmacies and a few restaurants. Tulum downtown has a bus stop and offers you bus services to the nearby Maya site Coba (1 hour drive), to Playa del Carmen, Cancun and International Airport of Cancun in the North.

Really close to Tulum you will find many natural sinkholes or "cenotes" and underground rivers. Visiting these places can be considered unique adventures, indeed; you should not miss them.

The archaeological site of Tulum is located in the North of Tulum downtown and hotel zone and can be reached easily by taxi or by bus. This very popular site is exclusive due to its location at the beach. If you visit the ruins you should definitively take with you your bath suits. Enjoy a sunbath and swim in the Caribbean Sea at the basements of ancient Mayan architecture!

Overall, Tulum is a growing destination for alternative vacation featuring all amenities and highlights you would like to have for a longer stay.

Usually, travel agencies donŽt offer hotels in Tulum. If you want to stay here, you have to book hotel and flight independently. Please review our list of hotels in Tulum to find an accommodation of your choice.

We recommend that you plan a longer stay in Tulum as it is the perfect place to escape the daily life and you may enrich your experiences by visiting ecological and archaeological attractions nearby.
