Akumal, Riviere Maya

Beautiful Akumal is located 40 minutes or 37 km (23 miles) south of Playa del Carmen and only 26 km (16 miles) north of Tulum, in the Riviera Maya. It is very easy to reach by bus, taxi or by car. The road has 4 lanes and is well signalized. Akumal is a paradise for swimming, snorkeling, diving or to go fishing. There are restaurants and bars as well as a lodging offer that can satisfy every budget.

Akumal is a Mayan word meaning "Land of the Turtles", as it has been and still is one of their favorite spot to nest. Moreover, Akumal is houses a non-profit ecological research Center dedicated to environmental~marine research, education, and sea turtle protection.

One of the top attractions of Akumal is its crystal clear bay, with its palm trees almost done as a seat, allowing you to lay down after swimming in the Caribbean Sea. It is a place to relax, to enjoy the beauty of paradise and fall in love with the Caribbean.
Other main attraction is for the divers, as the city is close to the world´s second largest coral barrier. You will be able to discover more than 200 cave entrances and subterranean rivers. It is a unique experience.

Akumal is not only its bay and its caves, you can also visit the Yal-ku Bay nearby. It is a spectacular place, almost virgin, and ideal to snorkel. You will find all kinds of fish. Other attractions include fishing. It is fun and usually everybody comes back with a fish.

There is a hotel zone in Akumal featuring all kinds of hotels to fit your budget. You can easily find marinas, restaurants, bars and convenience stores.

Remember to bring cash when visiting Akumal. Major hotels, restaurants and stores do accept credit card, but all the small businesses only take cash. Don´t forget to bring your snorkel gear to enjoy the bay at the fullest.
