Tequisquiapan was founded in 1551 and for three centuries its population was mainly indigenous. Nowadays, the town is characterized by its cobblestone streets, the iron gates before the doors and windows and, more recently, the use of domes in the beautiful architecture. Different interesting sites can be visited in Tequisquiapan, For example, the temple of Santa Maria, which is the town´s patron. However, with more historic interest can be regarded the Temple of Magdalena, where the first mass was given as the town was founded. People in Tequisquiapan enjoy strolling the main square, named Hidalgo. It features gorgeous arches and it is common to go there just to have a good time with friends while drinking a coffee.
The main parish, Santa Maria, next to the square, is the scenery for weddings, girl´s XV years old birthday celebrations, and other religious services. Departing from the Santa Cecilia square, a trolley can be taken to enjoy a guided tour through town and admire its many interesting spots. Two important festivities are held in Tequisquiapan. One of them is the Fair of the Bull in March, which include dances and bull related art exhibitions. In August, the International Fair of Wine and Cheese gathers wine and cheese producers to present exhibitions, conferences, and to offer samples of these products. | |
