Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca

Facing the Pacific Ocean and located 223 km. or 138 miles south of the city of Oaxaca, Puerto Escondido is east of Cacalotepec, Manialtepec, and Pinotepa Nacional; whereas it is west of Mazunte, Zipolite, and Huatulco. Although Puerto Escondido and Zicatela are separated cities, geographically together offer a beautiful destination in this southern state of Mexico.

Since the sixties, Puerto Escondido has been connected to other Pacific coastal points through Highway 200. Therefore, tourists began to arrive to this beautiful port and, besides, it started to be famous among surfers. Nowadays, this destination is a meeting point for tourists, surfers, local people, and fishermen.

Three main beaches are wonderful to spend hours under the sun in Puerto Escondido; there are Principal, Marinero, and Zicatela. The town is better known for its pedestrian street called "el Adoquin", where the main shops, restaurants, bars, and other important services are located. Crowds of young people enjoy walking on this street that has become very popular.

At Playa Principal, restaurants, boating, swimming, and snorkeling are available and visitors usually spend great time here. Southeast from here is Playa Marinero where snorkeling is good option together with boogie-boarding.

Small beaches like Playa Carizalillo, Playa Manzanillo, and Puerto Angelito are excellent for swimming due to its usually tranquil waves. On the other hand, Playa Bachoco, Playa Zicatela, and Barra de Colotepec are excellent for surfers due to its incredible, big waves.

On the east side of Puerto Escondido Bay is Playa Zicatela, which is not part of the town although it seems so. Zicatela is a long beach that can be seen from Playa Principal. Zicatela and its strong waves have made Puerto Escondido a world class surfing destination.

Puerto Escondido celebrates the November festivities. Many popular parties and gatherings are held both in Puerto Escondido and Zicatela, which politically are separated but during these celebrations those people taking part of them enjoy both sides alike.

Besides of offering a surfers paradise and hosting an annual international surf contest, Puerto Escondido offers many ecologic tours to places such as Roca Blanca, Las Nieves, the Turtle Sanctuary, Puerto Angel, Manialtepec, San Agustinillo, San Juan Lachao, Nopala, Mazunte, Zipolite and Ventanilla.

The wonderful weather and natural beauties of this region, together with the rich traditions of the towns of Oaxaca, turn Puerto Escondido into a truly visitable destination.
