Monterrey Downtown, Monterrey


The city of Monterrey is located 240 km. or 384 miles south of the border with the United States and 950 km or 1520 miles northeast of Mexico city. Municipalities surrounding Monterrey are, to the north General Escobedo, San Nicolas, and Guadalupe; to the east, Guadalupe, Juarez, Cadereyta, and Santiago; to the south, Santiago and Santa Catarina, and to the west, Santa Catarina, San Pedro, and Escobedo. Monterrey features 2 airports, the Northern Airport and the Escobedo Airport.

Monterrey, that has been founded three times: in 1577, in 1582, and in 1596, is a large metropolis with 3.5 million inhabitants framed by the majestic Saddle Hill, which is the city emblem. In the middle of the city the great square is found and it can be identified by the Trade Lighthouse, the elegant City Hall, and the Cathedral.

Monterrey is known as the Sultana of the North maybe because it raises among a rough landscape. Is is also known as the City of the Mountains and as the Dynamic City. Each of its nicknames faithfully reflects the versatile face of the city. Although it is, without any doubt, the main industrial city of the country, its importance as a business and cultural city has gone beyond its frontiers due to its prestigious Technological Institute, a modern ad impressive tourist infrastructure, and the fact of having hosted important international summits recently, such as the World Culture Forum in 2007.

Whether you come for leisure or for business, you will immediately point at its great architecture, while in the surroundings you will find endless parks and natural reservoirs offering exciting adventures as well as relaxation and tranquility. Monterrey offers an intense nightlife. A great number of nightclubs, bars, and restaurants are concentrated in the "Barrio Antiguo", downtown.


When visiting Monterrey, certain places should not be missed, like the "Macroplaza", the Municipal Palace, the City's Modern Theater, the Supreme Court of Justice, the Zaragoza Square, the Escobedo Park, and the Zoo. Important museums like the Monterrey Museum, the Museum of the Automobile, Centenario Museum, or the Hall of Fame of Professional Players of tennis and baseball are also worth visiting.
