Uruapan was founded in 1533 by Juan de San Miguel and according to some people the city owes its prosperity thanks to the Cupatitzio River that flows next to it.
Uruapan is a name related to the flourishing of flowers and fruits and is a Purepecha word of the culture developed in this region. Uruapan offers many interesting buildings that reflect not only the beautiful architecture but also the traditions and culture of the region. The Church of the Immaculate Conception belongs to the XIX century and the Chapel of the Magdalena is an interesting XVI century building. The Handicraft Museum, known as "La Huatapera" is next to the first temple mentioned. The Museum of the Four Indigenous Towns is housed in a building of the XVI century where the first hospital of the continent functioned. Today, this small yet interesting museum exhibits the work of the local craftsmen. A beautiful tropical area is located in the Eduardo Ruiz National Park. A nice swimming pool receives the water of the Cupatitzio River. Waterfalls and fountains complete the decoration of this nice, recreational area. Uruapan celebrates a number of festivals throughout the year, including the Avocado Fair in November, the Procession on Palm Sunday, and the San Francisco Day on October 4th. | |
