Patzcuaro, Michoacan


Located in the central part of the state of Michoacan, the cultural and artisan center Patzcuaro is surrounded by the cities of Morelia, Uruapan, and Zamora. It is situated next to the beautiful lake of the same name.

The state of Michoacan has a vast countryside characterized by winding rivers, rugged hills, and beautiful lakes. The interesting town Patzcuaro is located in the hills of this state and it features gorgeous streets and buildings that are most enjoyable if taking a walking tour around the town.

Patzcuaro features beautiful squares where to stroll or just to relax like in the Vasco de Quiroga Square or the Gertrudis Bocanegra Square.

Among its very famous handicrafts are the wooden furniture and the colorful textiles that can be admired and bought in many shops in this city.

Next to the town of Patzcuaro is the lake of the same name, which constitutes one of the largest bodies of water in the country. Around the lake are a number of villages. In this villages, people specialize in the production of different crafts.

In the middle of the lake of Patzcuaro, the island Janitzio can be reached by boat from the town. Janitzio is recognized for the colorful celebration carried out on the Dead's Day and on All Saints'Day on November 1st and 2nd.

Patzcuaro, features, around the lake, several archaeological zones that are worth the visit. When visiting Patzcuaro, tourists should also go to Ihuatzio, Quiroga, Tingambato, or Tzintzuntzan where, in addition to the archaeological interest, other architectural attractions can be admired. Besides, several different handicrafts are produced in these communities and tourists will be able to acquire them.

On Easter Week, Patzcuaro hostess particularly notable festivals involving colorful rituals and celebrations.
