Valle de Bravo, Mexico City


Located only 145 km. from Mexico City in southwest direction, Valle de Bravo, in the state of Mexico, is a picturesque and small town with stoned streets and a beautiful artificial lake. It borders north and west with the state of Michoacan and east with the city of Toluca. Valle de Bravo was founded in the early sixteenth century ad today is regarded both as a weekend resting place and a paradise for extreme adventures such as paragliding.

Natural beauties, an artificial lake, and plenty of cultural activities are some of the attractions of this beautiful small city.

Perhaps the main attraction in Valle de Bravo is the Avandaro Lake. It is a beautiful artificial body of water and part of the hydroelectric system built in 1947.

On the 21 square km. lake surface, different activities take place. Sports like sailing, kayaking, or skiing are some of the most popular. But enjoying the sunsets on a boat or being part of the 3-hour programmed "lunadas" or parties under the moon are also some of the favorites.

Avandaro Waterfall is a natural beauty and it is ideal for picnics and countryside treks. Visitors count with tables, grills, parking lots, public phones, restaurants, handicraft shops, and restrooms.

Another waterfall is also worth visiting and it is called Velo de Novia or Bride Veil. Its landscapes and surroundings are great for camping, daytrips, and treks to enjoy the contact with nature. It has parking lot and counts with security.

Just one block from downtown is the market where fresh food, vegetables, fruits, clothes, and shoes can be found.

A second market exclusively for handicraft opens daily.

Valle de Bravo has a cultural center where courses of music, dancing, and painting, among other, are offered. Moreover, the museum Joaquin Arcadio Pagaza functions as an art gallery where exhibitions can be frequently visited.

Only 25 km. from Valle de Bravo is the sanctuary of the Monarch Butterfly that immigrate from Canada during the months from November through March. It is a natural spectacle that everyone should attend.

Different religious and civil buildings are worth visiting within the town. Besides, ATVīs as well as other kind of fun vehicles to explore the surroundings can be rented downtown.
