Toluca, Mexico City

Located 65 kilometers to the west of Mexico City, Toluca is the capital city of the state of Mexico. It was founded in 1522 and it is situated at 2,680 meters high over sea level. The beauty of its landscape is represented by the 4.500 meter high Nevado of Toluca volcano. Moreover, the Botanical Garden features an impressive stain glass wall called "cosmovitral" that represents an interesting attraction both for tourists and locals.

Part of he richness of Toluca is expressed in its architecture. Its cathedral and other downtown buildings are well known expressions of the XIX century. Other styles such as baroque, neoclassical, modernist, contemporary, and popular are also present in the city architecture.

Toluca features rich popular arts, excellent gastronomy, and cultural and folkloric diversity. The latter can be appreciated in its traditional festivities, like the Holy Week that recreates the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Toluca is the second city with more museums in the country, some of them found in the Mexiquense Cultural Center.

A growing industrial economy is boasting Toluca into one of the most important cities of the country. Recently, an enhanced airport has helped reducing air traffic to Mexico City.
