Welcome to Zihuatanejo, Ixtapa & Zihuatanejo

Home > Guide > Ixtapa & Zihuatanejo > Cities > Zihuatanejo

Zihuatanejo is located on the coast of the Mexican Pacific, approximately 144 miles or 240 km. northwest from Acapulco. Only 5 km north of Zihuatanejo is the modern tourist resort Ixtapa. Northeast of Zihuatanejo is Highway 200 and El Limon dam. To the west, Zihuatanejo Bay houses many beautiful beaches, such as El Morro, Madera, La Ropa, and Las Gatas. The international airport is only 15 minutes by car from town, towards south. Due to its old-fashioned charm of Mexican traditional culture, Zihuatanejo is a location that ought to be visited.

Zihuatanejo is a traditional small port that, along with its neighbor Ixtapa - a modern and luxurious resort 5 km. or 3 miles away - offers a spectacular bay and ocean views, splendid weather all year around, great hotels, shopping malls, and countless activities for everyone in the Mexican Riviera or Costa Grande of the Mexican Pacific.

Zihuatanejo has the flavor and charm of Mexican traditional culture. Until the early 1970´s, Zihuatanejo was only a small fishermen town. But the town became a tourist destination that combines now the modernity and luxury of a great resort, Ixtapa, with the tranquility and tradition of a small port. Average temperature around the year is 26° C. or 78.8 ° F.

Zihuatanejo´s main attraction is its wonderful bay where tourists and boaters alike spend time enjoying the peaceful clear waters and the marvelous weather all year around. The bay offers various beaches for relaxation, recreation, dining, or simply enjoying the beautiful scenery. Besides, Zihuatanejo´s Bay is well-protected and it is considered a storm shelter.

Downtown Zihuatanejo known as "El Centro" is not only the main part of the town but it still is old-fashioned and has narrow streets made of paving-stones. Here, as well as by the beaches and at restaurants, many singers referred to as mariachis and other troubadours can usually be found. They entertain tourists and local people with serenades.

City Beach is just in front of Zihuatanejos´s Downtown. Next to it is the City Dock where tourists can rent a boat to visit Las Gatas Beach or to sport fishing. On the other side of this beach is the Archaeological Museum of the Costa Grande, where visitors can learn about local and regional history. The City Beach is probably not the best to swim due to its heavy boat traffic and the consequent pollution. However, the "Andador de los Pescadores" (Fishermen Walk) is located here and many good seafood restaurants can be tried.

While in Zihuatanejo, visitors should not miss beaches such as Las Gatas, La Ropa, Contramar, La Madera, and El Palmar.

Playa Manzanillo is between Playa Larga and Zihuatanejo Bay, in front of Potosi Bay. It is possible to walk to this beach but it is better to rent a boat. This beach is perfect to snorkel or just to enjoy beautiful views.

Recommended restaurants in Zihuatanejo include Bandido´s, a place where it is possible to mingle with local people and to try excellent Mexican food. Capricho Grill House serves lunches and dinners in a colonial atmosphere given by the old building where it is located. A combination of Mexican and Hawaiian cuisine can be found in Casa Bahia, where splendid views of the bay are a plus from this waterfront restaurant.
