Isla Holbox is located northwest of Cancun, 7 miles north of the top tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is approximately 7 miles or 11 km long and 1 mile or 1.6 km wide and can be considered a paradise for relaxation. The island northern shores face the Gulf of Mexico. This tourist destination is about 40 miles northwest of Cancun and can be reached from Chiquila by boat. There are water taxis with fixed departure schedule and you can easily rent an inexpensive private fishing boat to reach the island. From Cancun or the Riviera Maya, you can take a bus. The trip lasts around 3 hours from Cancun. If you go by car, take the Road 180 (Cancun - Merida) using the toll-free highway. When reaching El Ideal village, you will see signs pointing to Chiquila. This road will allow you to discover all the typical Mexican villages along the way. You can also reach the island by Aerosaab private planes from Cancun.

Isla Holbox, with about 1600 inhabitants, keeps its typical fishermen village charm with sand roads, small houses under palm trees and some of the most beautiful beaches around.

Holbox is a small almost unspoiled island. As an example, cellular phones do not work there. On the other hand you will find a beautifully preserved place, tons of shells on the beach, friendly people and a simple lifestyle for a great vacation.

There are many hotels around the Island and so much activities, including whale shark watching, the beautiful Yalahau Lagoon, Passion Island or Birds Island. Some of the islands are Natural Reserves and offer rich fauna and flora. The hotels, mainly located on the beach, offer all kind of activities. Restaurants serve the freshest and best cooked seafood and fish.

Whale shark watching, from June to August, is such an exciting expedition, that allows people to swim as close as 10 feet from the biggest fish in the ocean. Some of these sharks grow up to 50 feet but thereīs nothing to worry about, they eat exclusively plankton.

The best way to travel around the island is to rent a Golf cart. You canīt miss having seafood and fish. They canīt be any fresher as they are the catch of the day, and they are deliciously cooked. Enjoy the never ending beach, the white sand and warm waters year round. Holbox has so much to offer.

Since there are no banks nor ATM machines in Isla Holbox, you will need to bring Mexican pesos. Some hotels and restaurants do accept credit cards. If you rented a car to reach Holbox, you will need to park it at Chiquila, (there are no cars in Holbox) where you will be able to find plenty of parking.
