San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato

Located in the east-central part of the state of Guanajuato, historic San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful city visited by many tourists. San Miguel de Allende borders east with the state of Queretaro and San Jose Iturbe; south with Juventino Rosas and Comonfort, west with Salamanca and Guanajuato, and north with Dolores Hidalgo and San Luis de la Paz.

Maybe it is because its almost perfect weather, or because its picturesque cobblestone streets and colonial architecture, or perhaps it is due to the vibrant community of artists living here, but San Miguel de Allende, although without beaches, is regarded as one of the top tourist destination in Mexico.

San Miguel El Grande was the original name of this town that was founded by a Franciscan monk in 1542. San Miguel represented an important stop point on the silver route from Zacatecas.

Since 1737, the Garden is considered the downtown of the city. Today it is known as Civic Square General Ignacio Allende. The first building in this area dates from 1564 and was known as the Temple of San Raphael or the School of Christ. San Miguel church was finished in 1730 featuring baroque style towers.

Another example of this wonderful architecture is the House of Allende, a XVIII century building where independence hero Ignacio Allende was born.

For many visitors San Miguel de Allende has become a shopping paradise. Clothing, furniture, art, handicrafts, and souvenirs from all Mexico can be bought in San Miguel de Allende.

In addition, this city is well known due to its excellent educational offer. Coming to study in San Miguel de Allende ensures the learning of Spanish, jewelry courses, watercolors painting, dancing, or cooking, among many other options.

San Miguel de Allende has been the destination of retired foreigners. The foreign community of San Miguel is composed of persons coming from many different countries. They have chosen this town as their home and their presence has benefited the town as well.

For instance, the public library has received thousand of books donated by foreigners; an active theater community also allows this artistic expression on a frequent basis, and the wide offer of bars, restaurants, and related services is due in part to the diversity of the people living here.
