Durango City, Durango


Located in the southern central area of the state of the same name, the capital city Durango is in the valley known as La Guadiana. Federal Highway No. 45 takes you directly to this city. 128 km or 80 miles north of Durango city is the town of Ceballos and the entrance to the Zone of Silence. Gomez Palacio is 253 km or 157 miles northwest of the city and 64 km or 40 miles in the same direction is Mapimi. To the west is El Salto and the woods El Soldado as well as the National Park El Tecuan. To the east are the states of Coahuila and Zacatecas, whereas to the south are the states of Nayarit and Jalisco.

Founded in 1563 in a valley amid woods and between two rivers, the city presents a very dry climate with an average temperature of 18°C. or 64°F.

Visiting Durango downtown allows tourists to know some samples of the magnificent colonial architecture and contemporary styles in the city, like the Cathedral or Basilica Menor, the Government Palace, the House of Conde del Valle de Suchil, the Juarez University Main Bulding, the San Juan de Dios Temple, and the Santa Ana Temple. Tourists should also know the Victoria Theater which is a space for contemporary performing arts. An outstanding attraction is the Cerro del Mercado, which is made of iron mineral and stone.

Durango city features interesting museums, like the Popular Cultures Museum, the Regional Museum of Durango "El Aguacate", the Archaeological Museum Gannot Perschard, and the Funeral Arts Museum "Benigno Montoya". In addition, from Thursdays to Sundays, a train that tourists can take runs through the city downtown. The route lasts about an hour and there are not stops. The departure point is located in the Arms Square. In addition, the Durango Cultural Complex offers different museums that belong to the National Institute of Anthropology and History and to the Durango Institute of Culture.

In the immediate surroundings of Durango City, tourists have some interesting attractions to visit. For example, the archaeological zone of Ferreira, where structures and object of the Chalchihuite culture can be appreciated. Another option is the Sahuatoba Park featuring a ZOO and an acoustic area for outdoor concerts. Likewise, the Guadiana Park, which offers vast groves, has also an artificial lake, spaces and games especially for children, and swimming pools. At the same time, diverse activities can be enjoyed, such as fishing, camping, mountain bike riding, and walking amid the amazing Zone of Silence.

Durango stands out due to its astonish natural landscapes, therefore, it has been chosen as film location several times. Special interest has, thus, the thematic park and film set known as "Villas del Oeste" or "Western Villages". Different shows are presented here regularly. Besides, there is a good restaurant, a bar, and a disco. Other film sets are Chupaderos and Rancho La Joya.

Only 44 km from Durango, toward the town of Fresnillo, is the waterfall known as "El Saltito". Besides, the dams Peña and Guadalupe Victoria are also worth visiting.
