Cozumel, Cozumel

Home > Guide > Cozumel > Cities > Cozumel

Cozumel is renowned for its spectacular reefs that attract numerous species of exotic fish, its warm water and extreme clarity of up to 200 feet. These characteristics make the island a paradise for divers from all over the world and also an ideal destination for a placid family vacation or a romantic getaway.

 - CR -

Once a small fisherman island, now Cozumel has transformed into an important international port of call and cruise ship destination. The city receives an average of 600 cruises a year.
There is a ferry that connects Cozumel to Playa del Carmen. It arrives every hour in downtown San Miguel. You can also reach Cozumel by airplane.

Cozumel has an International Airport with direct flights from Cancun, Mexico City, and Dallas.

San Miguel de Cozumel its the main town on the island and where downtown is located. The small town offers all the services you can expect from a major city, including an ample variety of lodging options that goes from luxurious hotels to budget cabins. There are also numerous options for restaurants, shopping, bars, several bank offices, money exchange, hospitals and drugstores. The city has also an
Immigration office located at the Pier.

The city of Cozumel is built around the main square in downtown, facing the ferry terminal and the beach. The Rafael Melgar Avenue is the main artery in the city, running from North to South along the beach with all the restaurants, mall, stores and night clubs. The cruise ships’ pier is also located just off the avenue.

Cozumel is a small town to discover. You can easily walk your way around downtown and the beach front. You can also rent a horse carriage to enjoy the coastline in a romantic ride. If you need to move further than downtown, we recommend you to use the taxis as the distances can build up easily. For instance the Maya ruins of San Gervasio are located 3 miles off the city in the center of the Island.

San Gervasio and El Cedral are the two main archaeological sites in Cozumel and are worth the visit. For shopping, Cozumel duty free shops are a must, located along the coastline. Silver and gold jewelry is famous for its quality and attractive price.

Visiting Cozumel gives you the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of activities including bike tours, all terrain vehicles or atv tours, cenotes exploring, jungle horseback riding and of course, beach and sea adventures, such as snorkeling, certified scuba diving, deep sea fishing, and sailing.

Cozumel also has an important Museum in downtown, retracing the history of the Island from the early Maya to the tourist destination it has become.
