Mahahual, Costa Maya

Mahahual is located in the southern part of Quintana Roo, close to the border with Belize. North of Mahahual is the port of Costa Maya; northwest is the Cafetal junction and the town of Limones right on highway 307 that leads to Carillo Puerto. Mahahual faces the Caribbean Sea to the west, whereas the Chetumal Bay and the Bacalar Lagoon lie east. To the south is Xcalak, which is the last point before Belize.

To arrive to Mahahual by land, highway 307 links the main points along the Riviera Maya and the Costa Maya, from Cancun to Mahahual. By sea, yachts and cruise ships arrive to Mahahual on regular basis.

Mahahual is a beautiful location that offers both a typical fishing village and a cruise ship destination. Mahahual is the newest tourist development in Mexico, right in the heart of the Costa Maya. To experience Mahahual it is useful to keep in mind that the town changes a lot when cruisers are not present. Then is when Mahahual offers the fishing village atmosphere with a couple of good hotels, sandy roads, and excellent seafood.

Without the tourists from the cruisers, the location is really quiet and it is possible to relax on the beach while enjoying the sea, the breeze, and the sun. In addition, other restaurants are starting to appear and they have varied dishes at good prices.

When cruise ships arrive, many fun activities can be undertaken. Diving is a good option since reefs nearby promise a wonderful submarine experience. Besides, fishing is possible because many fishermen will offer their boats to this purpose. Moreover, wave runners and snorkeling equipment are available for rent.

Taxis can take you to nearby destinations that are worth visiting. For example, Bacalar is an incredible multicolor lagoon, and Kohunlich and Chacchoban are interesting Mayan sites to explore. Mahahual is a few miles south of the Sian Kaan Biosphere Reserve, therefore, the possibilities to explore the unspoiled surroundings are really great.
