Bomampak, Chiapas

Specially famous due to its impressive murals, Bonampak, in the Mexican state of Chiapas, is surrounded by jungle and in the middle of the Valley of Lacanha. Close to the border with Guatemala and about 32 km or 20 miles south from Yaxchilan lies this Mayan archaeological site that was constructed during the classic period, between A. C. 250 and 800. It was rediscovered, thanks to Lacandon-Mayan people, in the middle of the 20th Century. The site has an extension of more than 4 square kilometers.

Compared to past times, today it is quite easy to arrive to this place, since a good border highway has been built in the last decade. From Palenque, Ocosingo, Comitan, or Tenosique, in the state of Tabasco, it is possible to take a small plane that will land you in Bonampak

From the murals of Bonampak it is possible to know important features of the life of this city. Society was based on agriculture and people were organized in different social strata. At the top of this hierarchy was the royalty that needed the tribute of the people in order to keep the structure, not only in the city but in a more extensive region.

It is possible to admire lintels where battles are depicted. In them, prisoners were taken into sacrifice during astonish ceremonies with dances and fire. After the year A.C. 800, the city was abandoned and it marked the end of the Lords of Bonampak.

Visitors can admire this ruins from Monday to Sunday from 8:00 to 16:00 hours.
