Cancun can be divided in 2 different sections, the hotel zone and Downtown Cancun, which is a great location because it still offers the real Mexican flavor and several options to the visitors in a safe environment. Cancun city begins where Kukulcan Boulevard meets Bonampak Avenue at the most northern tip. Beyond this point to the north, Cancun hotel zone begins.

To reach Downtown from the Hotel Zone, just get on a bus or taxi on the Kukulcan Blvd and get off on Tulum Av. to enjoy Downtown Cancun. From Cancun Airport, Downtown is 30 minutes by bus. ADO offers transfer by bus at low rates directly to the main bus terminal downtown.

Once in Downtown, different markets can be visited, including Market 23, Market 28, and the Kihuit on Tulum Avenue. Traditional stores and handicrafts as well as excellent food options can be found in market 28 and on Yaxchilan Avenue. Besides, there are several places in those market to enjoy a traditional tacos or delicious Mexican and seafood dishes at low cost. There are several supermarkets, including Wall Mart, Costco, and Sam's Club.

Every Wednesday, in the Bull Ring, traditional Mexican shows including dance and Mariachis, take place. It is a good option by night.

it is good to know that almost as a rule, the closer to the beach you are, the more expensive the lodging will be. Therefore, many hotels can be found off the beach strip and they drop in price dramatically. Many are within a short drive or bus ride to the beach. For backpackers there is a number of cheap accommodations near the bus station. However, more comfortable lodging options including fine hotels are available too.

Cancun is a very safe city, you can use the bus to go anywhere downtown for as low as $0.65 USD, or a taxi ride for $1.8 USD in Downtown. It is very easy to move around downtown, and the people is quite friendly and will help you out in any case.

In Cancun Downtown you will find everything what a major city offers, from banks and ATMīs, to restaurants, nightclubs, movie theaters, and shopping malls.
