Ciudad del Carmen acquired its name in honor of the Virgin of Carmen and since 1717 celebrates in July its patron´s saint with festivities and social and cultural gatherings. Ciudad del Carmen lives mainly on the fishing industry. Besides, many oil fields have recently became another source of wealth attracting people from all over the country.
Amazing jungles surround both the Lagoon of Terminos and the Biosphere of Calakmul providing excellent sceneries for ecologic adventures and tourism. In addition, visitors can enjoy gorgeous beaches with white sand such as Isla Aguada, close the the lagoon, as well as North Beach, where a small zoo is located. Playa Maniagua and Playa Caracol are two other beautiful spots for swimming and to spend a few hours under the sun.
Ciudad del Carmen features many mangroves that are inhabited by several species, from reptiles and births to mammals. Like many tourist destinations in Mexico and like all of them in the Maya area, Ciudad del Carmen features an impressive archaeological zone that visitors should not miss. One of them is Xicalango, just a few miles away from Ciudad del Carmen and very close to the Tabasco border. Maya, Olmec, and Mexica people are thought to have used this place as a center for commerce.
