La Paz, Baja


Located in the east shore of the Baja Peninsula, La Paz is the capital city of the state of Baja California Sur. La Paz extension is 20,275 km˛ (7,828.2 sq mi). La Paz is located between the coastal mountains and the Bay of La Paz, on the Gulf of California, the most bio-diverse body of water in the world. It is connected by two ferries to the mainland in Mazatlan and Topolobampo. La Paz is 183 km and 153 km from San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas away, respectively.

Surrounded by desert, mountains, and oceans, La Paz shows a unique landscape of intense blue sky which shelters bushes, cactus, and flowers. Light green and deep blue waters wait for visitors at this Mexican destination. Clear sand beaches mixed with amazing historical sites are the context to the ancient richness of the - so named by Jacques Cousteau- largest aquarium in the world.

La Paz, capital city of the state of Baja California Sur in the northwest part of Mexico, is located 2 and a half hours south from Ciudad Constitucion and 2 hours north from Cabo San Lucas. La Paz is in the long northwest peninsula of the country between the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of California or Sea of Cortes.

La Paz offers mountains and valleys that are ideal for walking, exploring, camping, or just to contemplate its flora and fauna that characterize this desert and semi desert ecosystem.

This destination presents great lodging and accommodation variety for all visitors. It ranges from luxurious and comfortable Grand Tourism hotels to low-budgets hostels for backpackers. There are a number of campsites to watch starry nights as well as trailer parks for nomadic tourism.

Both tourists and local people enjoy La Paz atmosphere and the mix of shopping options and colonial buildings that promote a relaxing ambiance. To the north of La Paz, the most beautiful beaches are found: Playa Palmira, Playa el Coromuel, Playa el Caimancito, Playa del Tesoro, Playa Pichilingue, Playa Balandra, Playa el Tecolote, and Playa el Coyote. Nearby points highly recommended for scuba diving are Loreto and Mulege, due to their natural beauty.

La Paz has dozens of great restaurants to satisfy all kind of palates. You will have to choose among Chinese options like Nuevo Canton, Nueve Dragones or Nuevo Pekin; Mexican treats such as Capri, Bachos, or El Cortijo; or international cuisines at Oasis, Coral, or Kiwi.

One of the most attractive activities in La Paz and the coasts of Baja California is to watch the arrival, at the beginning of December, of hundreds of cetaceans, like the gray whale. Lagoons Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio are excellent places to enjoy and to learn from this natural entertainment.

Besides, La Paz offers the Environmental Education Center and Community Museum of the Whale, which is an educational space dedicated to spread knowledge about protecting cetaceans and surrounding environment through exhibitions and workshops.

La Paz offers a unique landscape based on an ecosystem of desert, mountains, and oceans. Visitors have a variety of lodging options and plenty of activities including swimming at beaches, expeditions, camping, and whale observation, among others.
