Regional Museum of Anthropology

The Regional Museum of Anthropology in Merida is worth the visit for several reasons. It is housed in one of the most beautiful palaces of Paseo de Montejo, it also has some of the most exclusive artifacts, from the Maya civilization to present day in display.

The Regional Museum of Anthropology offers the visitor a complete view of the Maya civilization with several artifacts from the close by sites. It is considered as one of the most important collections on the Pre-Columbian Mayan culture in the Yucatan Peninsula. The museum provides a great background before exploring the sites. You will learn about the everyday life of the Mayas, including the evolution of Mayan society: production, commerce, war, writing and calendars, architecture, customs, rituals, and funeral offerings.
The museum is also worth the visit for the palace where it is housed. Built at the beginning of the XX century, this palace is one of the most beautiful houses in Merida.

Located on Paseo de Montejo, the main avenue in Merida, the museum is also known as Canton Palace, after the name of the architect who built this wonder at the beginning of the 20th century. You can reach the museum easily from any hotel in downtown Merida using a taxi or simply enjoying a short walk along the shaded avenues to reach Paseo de Montejo.

If you plan to visit the Regional Museum of Anthropology on Sunday, the entrance is free but it is only open from 8:00AM until 2:00PM. It is closed on Mondays.
