The Island Museum in Cozumel offers you a glimpse into Cozumel's history, from its formation as an island to the modern tourist destination, and several expositions about the characteristics of the coral reefs and the insular ecosystems.

The museum comprises of 4 large exhibition rooms which detail the history of the island, from the formation to the Mayas, their civilization and their cities (including San Gervasio on the island). You will be able to discover several artifacts from the Spanish conquest, pottery and tools.
There is a large display about the beauty of the coral formations around Cozumel. There is a complete exhibit about the Caribbean Sea, including the coastal fauna and flora, the history of fishing throughout the centuries and the importance of the sea in the everyday life of the inhabitants of Cozumel.
Temporary exhibits are also shown with subjects mainly dealing with the sea and or the history of Mexico.

Located on the water front, in what was the first luxurious hotel ever built on the island, the museum is easy to reach from the ferry terminal. It is on Rafael Melgar Av, the main avenue along the coast. The museum is located around 5 minutes walking distance from the main square, at the corner of 6th street.

In the Museum you'll find bilingual guides, a bookstore, a library, a snack bar, handcrafts, internet service and toilets. The Museum is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., 365 days a year.
