Bird Watching in Puerto Vallarta

Bird watching in Puerto Vallarta is a great experience due to the variety of ecoystems composing the area. From the sea birds flying above Banderas Bay to the swamps species living around the city or the ones located in the Sierra Madre, right behind the city of Puerto Vallarta.

Bird watching is a year round activity and many species are endemic to Puerto Vallarta´s particular ecosystem.

Coastal and marshland bird: Puerto Vallarta has many species living in the Banderas bay premises. Some of the birds you can find are night herons, ducks, spoonbills, egrets, avocets, sandpipers, kingfishers. The best spots watch them are on the way to Mismaloya, or near Bucerias and the North East of the bay.

Mountain slope bird : On the jungle covered mountains of the Sierra Madre, you can find several species of birds, including woodpeckers, doves, flycatchers, parakeets, jays, magpies, orioles, hummingbirds, mockingbirds, owls, hawks and eagles.

Bird watching is a morning activity, the best hours are from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm. The coolest time of the day is when the sun slowly rising. Walking through the narrow trails of the Sierra Madre, under the shade of its lush jungle is a great experience, as it allows you to discover the diversity of the ecosystems of Puerto Vallarta area.
