Copala is an old colonial city located 40 miles off Mazatlan. It is a charming place to explore and be brought back in time. Visit the famous San Jose Church, its old mine and discover traditional handicrafts.

Copala is located southeast of Mazatlan. It can be reached by driving the Highway 15 for 12 mi. Once at Villa Union, follow the highway 40 towards Durango. You will pass the city of Concordia and after 20 miles, you will reach the city of Copala. It is best to rent a car to take this one day tour into the countryside.

Copala is an old colonial city built in a small valley at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. It was founded in 1565 due to its mineral lands. The city keeps its traditional look with cobblestone roads, colonial style homes and flowery patios. Feel free to explore the near by gold and silver mines. Another attraction worth the visit is the Barroque style Church of San Jose built between 1740 and 1745. Inside the church you will find stunning old paintings as well as beautiful neoclassical altars. Then take a little tour of the village, relax and admire the colonial houses and the nature surrounding this charming little town. After walking around, you can enjoy some delicious Mexican dishes at one of the restaurants in town.

The city of Copala can be visited in 1 day without problem. You can also spend time on your way back in the city of Villa Union which is another typical city of the area.
