Discovery Cancun present you the most updated information about seasonal weather conditions and ocean water temperatures through this section, and offers you facts and links about hurricanes.

Weather: Cancun has one of the best weathers in Mexico and the Caribbean, with average annual temperature of 79 ºF and highest temperatures of 97 ºF during the summer months. The weather is tropical with some rain specially during the months of September and October. During these months it is not rare to have a heavy rain late in the afternoon that will last for only a few hours.

Hurricanes: The hurricane season in the the Mexican Caribbean really starts in September and lasts until the end of October. The last hurricane to hit Cancun strongly was Wilma, in 2005. Hotels have been built with this fact in mind and they all offer hurricane shelters. Cancun officials are aware of this natural threat, and they take care of Cancun`s guests by having developed alert watches and evacuation plans in coordination with many national and international weather agencies.

Ocean Temperature: The Gulf of Mexico has an average temperature of 82°F. The coolest months are December and January and the hottest are July and August.
In Cancun you will be able to swim basically all year long.
On almost every beach, you will notice a safety flag. If it is a red or black one, please do not enter the ocean as it has strong undertow and currents towards the open sea. There are lifeguards on duty at every popular beach in Cancun.

Tips: Please be aware that the sunshine is strong in Cancun and even on a cloudy day you can get easily sun-burnt. We strongly recommend to use sun protection lotion always. This is specially important for small children. During your first days, try not to expose yourself to direct sunshine for more than 30 Min.
If you go snorkeling, put on a T-shirt as the water acts as a lens, widening the sunshine exposure that your back will resent for a long time.
If you take a walk, use a cap or hat.
