Ixtapa is a government planned tourist resort that was begun in the early seventies. The natural beauty of Ixtapa was used in order to develop this tourist mega project. Zihuatanejo means place of women and it was ruled by The Aztecs. After the Spanish conquest, its importance increased due to fishing and commerce. Zihuatanejo is the Spanish interpretation of the name that Aztecs had given to this land.
