Cancun History

Cancun emerged from the jungle in the early seventies as a result of a governmental plan to develop tourist infrastructure in Mexico. For hundred of years the island of Cancun was not considered as a potential pole of tourist and economic growth. However, it became the number one vacation destination in the country providing employment for thousands of people and receiving around 3 million visitors yearly. Heritage of Maya civilization can be admired in El Rey, one of the archaeological sites that Cancun features. It was inhabited from year 900 through 1550. Two out of 47 known structures at El Rey stand out and they are believed to had functioned for ceremonies and rituals.
